Walking from remember
Walking to forget
Past How do you do? Hello.
By open window—closed—closed
Brick and steel and neon
Sky metallic after dark
With amber streetlamp light
Feet talking in shuffles—
Whispers of the sole—
Heel and toe conversing
Over cracks in concrete,
Asphalt still warm from daylight,
Gravel walks defended by weeds.
Meanwhile steps echo
Along psychic corridors
Where behind forelocked doors
Dull pains transfer themselves
To calves and thighs and knees
Problems undiminished by solutions
Are tamed by self-propulsion.
